Under the THRIVE Project, AFROCAB has developed a growing online Knowledge Hub featuring practical resources to support community-led responses to Advanced HIV Disease (AHD). The hub provides free access to tools and materials designed to strengthen awareness, advocacy, and service delivery for AHD.

CHAI worked with the Global Fund to develop the AHD Commodity Calculator to help countries optimize quantification and forecasting of essential AHD commodities. The AHD Commodity Calculator enables national programs to input country-specific data on AHD cohorts, coverage targets, cryptococcal antigen (CrAg) positivity rates, and preferred treatment regimens, with commodities automatically quantified across key areas of AHD care.

Recently published by the Kenya Ministry of Health, this video and accompanying report highlight ongoing progress and reflections from Kenya’s AHD response, including the significance of integrated approaches to HIV care.

The THRIVE UP-ART study is a sub-study of the Uganda Paediatric and Adolescent HIV Cohort on Antiretroviral Therapy (UP-ART), a long-standing observational cohort study capturing data on children and adolescents receiving HIV care across Uganda. Across many high-burden countries, HIV programs are entering a period of significant transition. As donor funding shifts and health systems face growing pressure to deliver more with fewer resources, countries are increasingly integrating HIV services into broader health care systems. This shift offers important opportunities to improve efficiency, strengthen sustainability, and ensure that HIV services remain accessible in the long term.

Drawing on the Unitaid-funded THRIVE project, implemented by CHAI in partnership with AFROCAB and Penta, this session will examine how integration is playing out in practice.

On 4-5 September 2025, THRIVE project partners convened in Maputo, Mozambique to deliver a targeted two-day training workshop focused on Hospital Care for the Severely Ill Child with Advanced HIV Disease (AHD).

Service Quality Assessments (SQAs) are indispensable tools for programs aiming to deliver such care, providing the data needed to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Zimbabwe's experience with conducting SQAs for pediatric AHD services, building upon CHAI’s 2022 Pediatric AHD Landscape Assessment, offers a compelling case study.

Zimbabwe's THRIVE project provides valuable insights into how strategically integrating the comprehensive STOP AIDS training package within DSD models can enhance AHD service delivery.

THRIVE-Zimbabwe aims to evaluate the STOP-AIDS package across an entire rural Zimbabwean district of Shurugwi. The project seeks to identify and overcome barriers to ​its ​implementation at the community and primary care levels.

The THRIVE project aims to dramatically reduce mortality among adults and children living with HIV by enabling access to critical prevention, screening, and treatment commodities, and centering local leadership and community-owned solutions to find and serve people living with AHD where they are.

The WHO STOP AIDS package of care refers to a set of interventions designed to reduce morbidity and mortality in people with advanced HIV disease, particularly children and adolescents. It focuses on preventing, identifying, and treating HIV-associated infections and other opportunistic illnesses. The package includes screening, treatment, and prophylaxis for major opportunistic infections, rapid initiation of antiretroviral therapy, and intensified adherence support.

A key activity is a comprehensive Training Gap Assessment across participating countries. The aim was to better understand the current capacities and unmet needs of health staff directly involved in the implementation of the AHD package of care, including pediatricians, nurses, lab technicians, counselors, and others, to optimize its implementation.
