Restoring Life and Hope at Mkoba Polyclinic: How THRIVE AHD Community Champions Kept a Vulnerable Mother and Child on Treatment
In September 2025, a mother brought her young child to Mkoba Polyclinic with severe acute malnutrition, significant weight loss, poor feeding, oral thrush, and a swollen abdomen. Born outside a health facility in March 2024, the child had missed early infant HIV diagnosis and the opportunity for timely treatment. Clinical testing confirmed that both mother and child were living with HIV, while further investigation revealed that the child also had tuberculosis (TB).

How Community Support Is Transforming Lives in Advanced HIV Disease Care
Starting treatment for advanced HIV disease (AHD) is a critical first step, but outcomes depend on whether people can stay on treatment. Under the Unitaid-funded THRIVE project, led by CHAI in partnership with AFROCAB and Penta, AFROCAB AHD Champions in Zimbabwe support people through the period after diagnosis, when the risk of falling out of care is high.
