Across Benue State in Nigeria, vulnerable children are being reached through community-led interventions that are saving lives. From infants to adolescents, these stories remind us of the critical and urgent importance of linking children with HIV to the care they deserve.

When Stella Machuma first visited a clinic in Bungoma, Western Kenya, she carried not only her one-and-a-half-year-old son but also a heavy burden of fear. What began as a routine antenatal care visit during her pregnancy in 2023 would change her life forever.

On 4-5 September 2025, THRIVE project partners convened in Maputo, Mozambique to deliver a targeted two-day training workshop focused on Hospital Care for the Severely Ill Child with Advanced HIV Disease (AHD).

THRIVE-Zimbabwe aims to evaluate the STOP-AIDS package across an entire rural Zimbabwean district of Shurugwi. The project seeks to identify and overcome barriers to ​its ​implementation at the community and primary care levels.

A key activity is a comprehensive Training Gap Assessment across participating countries. The aim was to better understand the current capacities and unmet needs of health staff directly involved in the implementation of the AHD package of care, including pediatricians, nurses, lab technicians, counselors, and others, to optimize its implementation.

When the U.S. Government issued a stop-work order and froze foreign aid funding, it led to significant disruptions across low-and middle-income countries. In Uganda, key health programs ground to a halt. One of the people affected was Rogers Balyejusa, a dedicated HIV index testing focal person whose role, previously supported by a CDC-funded project, was terminated due to the funding freeze.

The THRIVE project aims to optimize the implementation of STOP AIDS package through research and stakeholder collaboration. A key component of the project is the Pediatric Expert Advisory Group (PEAG), a stakeholder group led by Penta under the THRIVE project to facilitate cross-country learning, review the current pediatric-specific evidence, and inform future research and tailored interventions to ensure that each child receives the most appropriate level of care.
