Our Mission
The THRIVE (Transforming Advanced HIV Disease CaRe in LMICs through ComprehensiVe and Equitable Access) Project is implemented by a consortium led by Clinton Health Access Initiative, in collaboration with Afrocab and Penta. The consortium aims to dramatically reduce mortality among adults and children living with HIV by enabling access to critical prevention, screening, and treatment commodities, and centering local leadership and community-owned solutions to find and serve people living with advanced HIV disease (AHD) where they are.
Background
In 2022, 630,000 people died from AIDS – more than one death every minute. This staggeringly high number of preventable deaths reveals a stark gap between global goals and actual outcomes. To deliver reductions in morbidity and mortality, a number of challenges that remain must be addressed.
Challenges that remain in the AHD space:
-
New patients presenting late or re-engaging in care
-
Insufficient access to diagnostic, prevention, and treatment tools
-
Misdiagnosed and undiagnosed opportunistic infections
-
Breakdowns along the cascade of care
-
Very limited implementation of STOP AIDS guidance for children with AHD
-
Gaps in early detection and rapid linkage to ART for children
-
Populations & geographies are being left behind
Our Consortium
This work was made possible with the support of Unitaid through the Clinton Health Access Initiative-led THRIVE project in partnership with Afrocab and Penta. Penta is working in partnership with operational research partners Zvitambo, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, and Mildmay Uganda to generate evidence on the implementation of the STOP AIDS package. Afrocab is working with communities in focal countries.
The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries, while strengthening the capabilities of governments and the private sector in those countries to create and sustain high quality health systems that can succeed without our assistance.
Afrocab is a network for community HIV treatment advocates across Africa. Afrocab was formed in 2011 to facilitate community treatment access dialogue with multinational and generic drug manufacturing companies, policy makers, UN agencies, civil society organisations, and others working on clinical research and development, and ensure meaningful community participation across HIV-related decision-making.
Penta is a global, independent, scientific collaboration devoted to determining and implementing the best ways to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases in children. Through a global network of researchers (the Penta ID Network), Penta support research that seeks to better understand both the dynamics of transmission and how to get optimal health outcomes for pregnant women and children.
